Join us this Saturday at Mill Springs Academy for this month’s SoAR Launch, from 11 AM to 4 PM.
We will, of course, be continuing with social distancing and wearing masks is strongly encouraged (please wear a mask when at prep table and at safety check/launch control, and when interacting with others). Remember, you’re protecting them, and they’re protecting you. .
This is our low-power field (we recommend altitudes of no more than 1000 feet to assure you getting your rocket back), but if you know what you are doing it is possible to fly mid power successfully.
The National Weather service says the weather should be sunny but very cold and windy with a high of only 41 degrees with wind out of the northwest at 10-11 MPH with gusts up to 19 MPH.
A Cub Scout troup will start launching at 9:30 AM, so if you want to come out early and fly with them, you are welcomed to come out.

Join us this Saturday at Mill Springs Academy for this month’s SoAR Launch, from 9 AM to 2 PM. The National Weather service says it’ll be partly sunny, with high chance of rain after 1 PM, but very small amounts are predicted and cloud cover does not reach the 80% threshold, which usually means it will look threatening, but probably stay dry . Highs around 80. Winds will be easterly at 9 MPH. We’re still going to take some precaution and start the launch two hours earlier to avoid any precipitation or thunder. Try to get there as early as you can for the best shot at getting your rockets off the pad.
We will, of course, be continuing with social distancing and wearing masks is strongly encouraged (please wear a mask when at prep table and at safety check/launch control, and when interacting with others). Remember, you’re protecting them, and they’re protecting you. We’re still hoping to work with the Electronic Flight Card system (sign up at soarrocketry.org/cards ) but it still won’t be fully operational and traditional flight cards will be available at the prep table.

[Note: Times and costs have changed.] Creekside Firing Range in Taylorsville, GA has agreed to allow SoAR to sponsor a high power launch on that field on Sunday, January 24, 2021. As usual, low and mid-power rockets are welcome. Spectators are welcome too!
SoAR must pay $500 for the use of the field so we will charge a $15 per family flight fee for this launch to cover our costs. The field has toilet facilities!
The Waiver for this field is 6,000 feet but the SoAR limit is 5,500 feet to provide a ‘motor performance buffer’.
We’ll start this launch at Noon and be over at 5 PM to allow time for clearing the field before dark. If you can come out as early as 10AM to help set up the field, that would be appreciated.
If you need 1515 rail, please let Jorge know (or you won’t have anything set up for your flight)..
If you are planning to fly anything larger than a “K” motor, please let Jorge know (or you won’t have anything set up for your flight).
You can sign up for range duty. Like GRITS, if there are range duty slots that don’t get filled, we will just stop the launch….please sign up! Right now we need positions for the last hour of the day.
Chris’ Rocket Supplies should be on site for your high power motors purchases.

Instead of suffering in a field on a hot August afternoon in Dawsonville (though it looks like it will actually be rainy), SoAR’s tradition is to get together at Jorge Blanco’s house for ice cream cake, non-alcoholic beverages and lots of rockets in various stages of construction. We’ll do that this Saturday from 10AM to 2PM. 12110 Brookfield Club Dr. Roswell, Ga. 30075-1264. Phone: 770.235.0273 cell (Jorge Blanco)

It’s a new year, thank goodness, and therefore time for SoAR elections and approval of next year’s launch schedule.
RocketTalk will be held from 7pm – 9pm, tonight, Thursday, January 14. It will be online as currently usual (check the RocketTalk page for the Big Blue Button to join the meeting). Jorge will open with current SoAR Business, which usually includes the tentative schedule for club launches (especially the Fourth Saturday launches that occur at different locations from month to month). Mill Springs launches will continue to be on the Second Saturday of the month, so the February launch will be on February 13 . The minutes of last year’s meeting will be presented and accepted. Then we’ll hold elections for the four elected officers, President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. At the moment, it appears all the current officers are fine with serving another year, but if you think you’d like to run for a position (or just volunteer for one of the appointed positions), let Jorge know ASAP.
Of course, only those who are SoAR members for 2021 are allowed to vote, so renew before the meeting.
After elections we’ll have RocketTalk as usual, where everyone has their own five minutes or so to talk about their rocketry projects, ask questions about rockets, and so on.
