Turkey & GRITS Coming In November

Turkey & GRITS Coming In November

It’s that time of year again, with rocketeers from all over the south getting ready to attend Turkey & GRITS 2022 in Nashville, GA just outside of Tifton, GA, on Thanksgiving Weekend. All types of hobby rockets will take to the skies: model rockets, mid power, and high power up to 14000 feet!

Registration is now open. Cost to attend both days is $35, while the single day fee is $20.

August Low-Power Launch in Loganville This Saturday

August Low-Power Launch in Loganville This Saturday

Part of SoAR’s mission is outreach, which usually takes the form of launches presented for Scouts or other youth groups (or them attending our launches when convenient), but we have an opportunity to support the Georgia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol with their statewide Rocket Challenge. The only day they could schedule was the second Saturday of August, which coincides with our normal day for a launch at Mill Springs. So, we’re moving the August 13 launch to Loganville to provide a rare launch opportunity for people on the east side of Metro Atlanta. The CAP is holding their launch on a roughly 800′ by 700′ field behind the American Legion post on highway 78, and we will have use of it exclusively from noon to 4 PM on Saturday, August 13 while the CAP participants are inside building their rockets (Alpha III’s and LoadStars). From 4 to 7PM, the CAP Cadets will fly their new creations while we help, and we’ll be able to continue flying in between their flights.

If you would like to help with the CAP portion of the launch, contact Jorge so that he can get you a LoadStar (which you are expected to build).

Obviously, with the close proximity of the field to a busy highway, retail, and residential areas, safety will be paramount. Do not outfly the field, and leave your untested designs at home.

August RocketTalk Meeting is Online Tonight

Tonight’s RocketTalk Meeting is Online Only

Come one, come all, to the SoAR RocketTalk meeting tonight at 7PM, and by that we mean join us online through Zoom by clicking this link!
Or you can go to the RocketTalk page on the website and click the Big Blue Button.

A couple of months ago we found that our regular in-person meeting place was about to go through renovations, and now it looks like it may take the good part of a year to finish. We’re looking for another location, but for now we will have to rely on Zoom.

Extra Dawsonville Launch Scheduled for This Saturday

Extra Dawsonville Launch Scheduled for This Saturday

The last few years SoAR has cut back to one launch per month in July and August to reduce the wear and tear on the crew that runs launches.

Since last week’s launch got cancelled, the SoAR BOD has agreed to schedule a launch at the Dawsonville field on 07/23/2022 starting at 9am and going till 2pm.  Please join us!

Note that the August 13th launch is not at the Mill Springs Academy.  The August 13th launch will be in Loganville and the times are different.  We will support the Georgia Wing of the Civil Air patrol with their efforts to teach model rocketry to their Cadets.

The Loganville field dimensions are larger than Mill Springs (ok, it’s nearer to square and at least 600’x800’).  The website states that we fly from noon till 4pm…while that’s true, we can continue to fly until 7pm….but the Cadets get priority after 4pm.

Please come out with your most extravagant projects to show as much variety to the Cadets as possible.
